  • Fabrication Assistant

    Fabrication Assistant

Focusing on Productizing Science®, the group supports customers around the world in taking scientific discoveries and inventions and developing them into commercially successful products. The group’s portfolio includes a number of exciting and cutting-edge brands which develop, manufacture and globally market a variety of products and services.

    Blacktrace has significant internal competences around glass processing, and one aspect of that is the manufacture of glass microfluidic devices using world class microfabrication capabilities.

    We are now looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Fabrication Assistant to join this microfabrication team, reporting to our Production Manager.

    Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

    • The precision manufacture of glass & fused quartz microfluidic devices. Core processes include: Substrate cleaning, Thin film deposition, Photolithography, Wet glass etching, Wafer-to-wafer alignment, Fusion bonding, Wafer dicing, Micro-hole drilling, Lapping & grinding, Optical polishing.
    • Prepare orders for despatch.
    • Process development to advance in-house processing capabilities.
    • Device testing.
    • Inventory control.

    Previous experience is not essential as training will be provided, however candidates should be familiar with engineering drawings, and be computer literate. Moreover, this role might be very attractive to candidates having a background in the one or more of the following manufacturing areas:

    • Microfluidic device microfabrication.
    • Graticule/reticle manufacture.
    • Spectrophotometer cell production.
    • MEMS.
    • Inkjet printhead production.
    • Optical component manufacture.
    • Solids processing of technical glass & fused quartz.

    The role is based at the Anglian Business Park in Royston, a short commute from Cambridge.

  • Financial Controller

    Due to a rapid and exciting period of growth, we are looking for a reliable Financial Controller to undertake all aspects of financial management, including financial reporting, budget preparation and variance analysis, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures. You will also analyse everyday financial activities and subsequently provide advice and guidance to senior management on future financial plans in order to enable them to make sound business decisions and meet the company’s objectives.

    Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

    • Oversee operation of the finance department, set goals and objectives, and design a framework for these to be met; help grow the team, which currently comprises one AAT qualified finance assistant and two trainees.
    • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls; ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
    • Manage the preparation of the company’s budget and financial forecasts including corresponding with various other departments, discussing company plans and agreeing on future paths to be taken.
    • Support month-end close process, including providing and publishing timely monthly financial statements and interpreting financial information to managerial staff as well as analysing costs, variances and the company’s actual performance compared to the business plans.
    • Liaise with overseas accountants to ensure the company’s financial interests are being correctly represented, and any local requirements are being met.
    • Support year-end close process including liaising with auditors to coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting and ensure appropriate monitoring of company finances is maintained and comply with national and international reporting requirements and tax filings.

    Skills and Qualifications:

    • Proven experience as a Financial Manager or Financial Controller
    • Qualified Accountant (CIMA/ACCA/ACA), 5 years+
    • Able to manage, guide and lead employees to ensure appropriate financial processes are being used
    • A proven manager, able to build a strong team
    • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
    • Proficient user of finance software and Microsoft Excel
      • We currently use Sage Line 50 Accounts, but are in the process of moving to Sage X3 ERP
    • A solid understanding of financial statistics and accounting principles
    • Working knowledge of all UK statutory legislation and regulations

    Due a rapid period of growth we are now looking for a motivated, bright and organised Production Technician to join the Operations team, reporting to the Production Manager.

    Duties will include but are not limited to:

    • Assembly of electro-mechanical products
    • Test to specification
    • Record build issues to ensure our products are continuously improved
    • Inventory control
    • Prepare orders for despatch
    • Update build and test documentation
    • Cost reduction projects on existing products
    • Fault diagnostics and repair

    Skills required:

    • Experience in electro-mechanical assembly and test
    • High level of accuracy
    • Excellent Attention to detail
    • Good numeracy
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Outlook and Excel
    • Ability to work independently and in a team
    • Experience to work with engineering drawings
    • Highly motivated, enthusiastic and organised
    • Ability to prioritise is essential

    Our manufacturing site in Sutton (near Ely, Cambridgeshire) is the leading premium manufacturer of custom scientific and industrial glassware, offering the largest custom glass manufacturing service available within the UK, with the UK’s most advanced glass blowing facility.

    To help us achieve our ambitions we wish to recruit a highly skilled scientific glassblower, ideally with a wide and varied experience and above all else the desire and dedication to achieve excellence.

    Your main responsibilities:

    • Manufacture glassware of all sizes, including medium to large jacketed vessels.
    • Work to the high standards and specified tolerances required by our clients.
    • Help to develop and improve manufacturing processes.
    • Repair and modify specialist items.
    • Adopt proven methods of production.
    • Assist in the training of less experienced team members.
    • Happy to work alone or be part of a team as required.

    Your skills and experience:

    • A minimum of 6 years’ experience in producing varied scientific glassware.
    • Applicants should be able to demonstrate a reasonable level of numeracy, at least to the point needed to calculate volumes and sizes, as required in the manufacturing of general glassware.
    • Be able to read and interpret design drawings.
    • Demonstrate commitment to achieving the highest possible standards.
    • You may also have other practical transferrable skills which may have been gained through work or personal interest.
